The Little House is happy as she sits on a hill top watching the sun rise and set day after day. Even though each day is different the Little House stays the same. The seasons come and go from snowy winter to the new birth of spring, to the sunny days of summer, and the chilly, golden harvest of fall. Then the world begins to change around her. She watches as the city draws near and grows. Finally, The Little House is surrounded by tall buildings and deafened by the sounds of the city. She begins to show the signs of age, peeling paint and cracked windows. Then one day she is carried away on a trailer, placed on a hill, repaired and restored. She again enjoys the changing seasons, hears the songs of the birds, and watches the world she loves. Published in 1942 by writer/artist Virginia Lee Burton, the story of the little house won the Caldecott Medal and has been a classic ever since.
